Sutton’s Vertical Gardens
Sutton’s Vertical Gardens, located outside Halifax, Nova Scotia, uses a FarmBox Foods container farm to supply fresh, locally grown lettuces to restaurants and grocers across the region. Motivated by pandemic-era produce shortages and rising costs, Kris and Brenda Sutton turned to vertical farming to ensure food quality, consistency and independence from supply chain disruptions. The fully insulated, climate-controlled farm enables year-round production and delivers nutrient-dense greens just days after harvest, meeting wholesale demand with superior freshness.
FarmBox Foods’ technology stood out for its efficiency and low labor requirements compared to competing systems. Within weeks of installation, Sutton’s Vertical Gardens was operational and producing high-quality crops. Since 2022, the container farm has supported the couple’s vision of running a meaningful, sustainable business close to home, while also laying the groundwork for future educational opportunities for local youth.
For wholesalers, this model proves that container farms can be a reliable, scalable solution for supplying fresh produce with minimal distribution lag. Sutton’s Vertical Gardens is a source of pride for its community, embodying the values of local sourcing, food transparency and entrepreneurial resilience.

Thirsty Roots Farm
Thirsty Roots Farm, a family-run business in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, uses a FarmBox Foods container farm to grow fresh, nutrient-dense greens year-round for local restaurants and retailers. Housed in a repurposed, climate-controlled shipping container, the vertical hydroponic farm—dubbed ROOT 1—operates with high water efficiency and minimal environmental impact, making it an ideal solution for consistent wholesale produce supply in any season.
By partnering with Powerhouse on Broadway, a local farm-to-table restaurant, Thirsty Roots Farm ensures its greens are served just 4 miles from where they’re grown. This ultra-local model enhances flavor, reduces food miles, and supports the regional economy. The partnership has already led to the creation of custom salads and cocktails that highlight the vibrant quality and variety of produce grown inside the container farm.
Thirsty Roots Farm exemplifies how small-scale, tech-enabled agriculture can serve the wholesale market reliably and sustainably. With expansion plans and a growing list of partners, TRF is showing how container farms can empower communities, support local businesses, and redefine food accessibility through innovation and tradition.
